Monarchs bolster backline with addition of Okuma

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Independence announced on Thursday that the club had acquired Cameroonian international Bertrand Owundi on loan from Major League Soccer’s Minnesota United FC. As a part of the loan agreement, Minnesota United FC reserves the right to recall Owundi at any time.

The 24-year-old joined Minnesota last February 2018 from Cameroonian side Les Astres FC. Owundi made his Cameroonian National Team debut last year during 2018 African Cup of Nations Qualifying. The Ekono, Cameroon native last played for MNUFC in a friendly match against Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa on July 11th.

MONARCHS ADD OKUMA: Real Monarchs SLC announced it had signed defender Joseph Stanley Okumu for the remainder of the 2018 season, pending the approval of his P-1 Visa, league and federation approval. The terms of Okumu’s signing were not disclosed.

Okuma most recently played for AFC Ann Arbor, and has competed internationally for the Kenyan National Team in addition to the country’s U21 and U23 sides.

“It feels great to be part of a great team like the Monarchs,” Okumu said. “The Monarchs are at the very top of the league so to be a part of that is special. I want to do my best to help the team win another championship and be successful in the playoffs.”
