Former Miami FC shot-stopper joins club for remainder of 2018 season

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Rowdies announced on Thursday the club had signed experienced goalkeeper Daniel Vega to its squad. The signing is pending league and federation approval

Vega spent the last three seasons with Miami FC, where last season he recorded a 0.88 goals-against average and 15 shutouts to claim the league’s Golden Glove award.

“We’re very happy that a player of Daniel’s quality is available for us at this point in our season,” said Rowdies Head Coach Neill Collins. “We want competition at every position in the team because it makes everyone better. If we feel that a player can raise our level, then we’ll always be interested. We’re looking forward to seeing what Daniel can bring to us.”

Vega joins a Rowdies goalkeeper contingent that also currently includes Cody Mizell and Akira Fitzgerald. Mizell has made 15 starts in the Rowdies’ 23 games so far this season, posting a 66.5 save percentage and a 1.40 goals-against average alongside four shutouts.

“Vega’s experience will certainly help us at this point of the season,” said Rowdies Chairman & CEO Bill Edwards. “We always look for talented players that can help us win and he’s one of them. I’m looking forward to watching him make a difference on the pitch and help us win.”

A native of Cutral Có, Argentina, Vega broke through with Nueva Chicago in the Argentine second division from 2005-2007. His play there earned him a move across Buenos Aires to South American giants River Plate. He made 76 appearances for River Plate from 2007-2012 before moving to Europe with Cyprus’ Anorthosis Famagusta, from where he joins Miami FC in January of 2016.
