Hartford Appoints Powell as Chief Operating Officer

Joins 2019 USL expansion club from Drexel University and Detroit City FC

HARTFORD, Conn. – Hartford Athletic announced on Monday the club had hired of Donovan Powell as Chief Operating Officer for the club, which will join the USL for the 2019 season and is scheduled to begin play at Dillon Stadium in Hartford next spring.

Powell comes to Hartford Athletic by way of Drexel University and Learfield Sports – where he served as general manager of sports properties – and Detroit City FC – where as general manager he led business operations and was the first full-time employee of the Club. Under his leadership, Detroit City FC became one of the most exciting soccer clubs in the U.S. at any level and a financial and cultural success in the Detroit region.  Under Powell, the Club’s average attendance increased 200%+ to more than 6,000 fans per game in 2017 and garnered national media attention due to the passionate support of their fans.

“I’m excited to be joining Hartford Athletic as we build the club from the ground up,” Powell said. “There is so much potential in the Hartford market, and I see a lot of similarities to the success we saw in Detroit. It’s our goal to provide a world class professional soccer experience and to bring the community together through the beautiful game.”

As Chief Operating Officer, Powell will oversee all business operations for the Club and report to Mandell. Powell received an M.S. from Drexel University and a B.A. from Bowling Green State University. Powell served in the United States Marines on active duty from 2002 - 2006. During service time, he led a command as Platoon Sergeant and deployed to Fallujah in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
