The 2018 PDL Playoffs kick off on Friday night with all four regional champions set to be determined over the next three days on the road to the 2018 PDL Championship. The leading pre-professional league in North America, the PDL has again featured some of the top prospects in the United States and Canada over the course of this season as they work toward reaching the next level in their careers.

The USL is home to many of the PDL’s former standouts, including players who are having a serious impact for their teams after making the move to the professional ranks this season. Here are five first-year pros who have stood out so far in the 2018 USL regular season.

Eric Dick, Swope Park Rangers

A standout for OKC Energy U23 a season ago when he was named to the PDL All-Southern Conference Team, Eric Dick has proven a strong presence in net for the Rangers this season. Registering three shutouts in seven appearances with a 72.4 save percentage, the 6-foot-5 shot-stopper has saved one of two penalty kicks he’s faced this season and is living up to the No. 18 prospect ranking he earned last summer.

Foster Langsdorf, Portland Timbers 2

A former San Francisco FC forward, Langsdorf has helped the Timbers 2 rebound from a last-place finish in the Western Conference a season ago to contention for a trip to the USL Cup Playoffs for the first time in club history. The 22-year-old has put together an impressive strike rate with eight goals in 14 appearances for T2 this season while recording a 27.6 percent conversion rate that puts him eighth in the league among players with at least 25 shots this season.

Paul Marie, Reno 1868 FC

One of the latest to come through Reading United AC’s pipeline to the professional ranks, Marie has put in a stellar first season with 1868 FC on loan from the club’s MLS partner the San Jose Earthquakes. Marie has recorded one goal, three assists and 12 key passes this season from right back, showing off his ability to get forward while also putting in solid work in the defensive end during Reno’s current 16-game undefeated streak.

Thomas Vancaeyezeele, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC

The former Mississippi Brilla FC midfielder arrived in Pittsburgh looking to prove himself after going unselected in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft and has quickly become an integral figure in the Hounds’ lineup this season. Playing every minute of Riverhounds SC’s 17 regular-season contests going into this weekend, Vancaeyezeele has recorded 45 interceptions, won 75.8 percent of tackles and is 123 of 223 in duels as part of the best defensive side in the league so far this season.

Brian White, New York Red Bulls II

There was plenty of expectation on the 2017 PDL Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot winner, but Brian White has continued to be prolific since making the move from the New York Red Bulls U23 to the Red Bulls II. With seven goals and five assists in 20 appearances, White has been part of the best attack in the USL so far this season and is shaping up to be one of the candidates for the USL Young Player of the Year award at the end of the season.
