THREE THINGS THAT MATTERED

1. The Swope Park Rangers made their move into the top three of the Western Conference standings with a victory against Seattle Sounders FC 2 that came despite the side being down to 10 men for almost 70 minutes after Matheus Silva was sent off for a dangerous challenge on S2’s Francisco Narbon. The Rangers have now won four of their last five games to join the pack chasing Real Monarchs SLC at the top of the Western Conference.

2. Swope Park’s Felipe Hernandez produced a great individual finish to put the Rangers ahead for his first goal of the season, setting up a half-volleyed effort from 25 yards with a clever first touch that allowed the ball to set up perfectly for a cleanly-struck finish. The goal was Hernandez’s third overall for Swope Park, with all three having come from outside the penalty area for the 20-year-old midfielder.

3. Seattle produced chances to get back into the game after going up a man, but the hosts were let down by their finishing which saw the side finish without an official shot on goal in its 10 shots overall. David Estrada put the ball in the net for the hosts three minutes into the second half but was flagged for offside to deny a stellar passing move by S2 as it looked for an equalizer.

GAME REPORTS

SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC 2 (0), SWOPE PARK RANGERS (2)

The Swope Park Rangers scored once in either half despite playing almost 70 minutes down to 10 men in a 2-0 victory against Seattle Sounders FC 2 at Cheney Stadium. The Rangers took the lead in the 10th minute as Felipe Hernandez found space to fire home a dipping shot from distance that found the left corner of the net, but the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Matheus Silva was sent off in the 21st minute after a hard challenge on S2’s Francisco Narbon. Despite the man-disadvantage Swope Park was awarded a penalty kick on the hour-mark, only for Hadji Barry’s shot to be turned aside by S2 goalkeeper Calle Brown to keep it a one-goal game, but five minutes later Hernandez was brought down in the area and Barry made the most of his second chance with a shot to the top-right corner to provide the insurance goal in a second victory for Swope Park against S2 this season.
