SAFC Looks to Earn First Road Win Against the Switchbacks

San Antonio FC (5-4-5) will travel to face Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (7-8-2) at Weidner Field on Saturday, June 30 at 7:00 p.m. CT. The match marks the first meeting between the two clubs in USL play after SAFC beat the Switchbacks on penalty kicks in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

SAFC will look to bounce back on the road after falling 0-2 to Reno 1868 FC last Saturday. The club will also aim to earn their first away win against the Switchbacks after recording a win and a draw at home against the club and falling twice at Weidner Field.

“We’re hungry (for a win) after not getting the result we wanted last weekend,” SAFC forward Alex Bruce said. “We’re going in with a strong mentality to win the game. There are some circumstances that might make it difficult on us like the weather and different environment, but we won’t let it affect us. We will push through and try to get the win.”

SAFC and Colorado Springs faced each other just over a month ago on May 23 in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Alamo City club eliminated the Switchbacks from the competition in a penalty shootout after playing to a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes.

The Switchbacks head into the match in eighth place in the Western Conference, and will look to build on a two-game winning streak at home. Colorado Springs has lost just two matches at home this season (5-2-2), while the club has won all three matches in which former SAFC forward AJ Ajeakwa has scored.

For SAFC, scoring the first goal of the night will be a priority. The club is currently 3-0-1 when scoring first, but has conceded the first goal of the match in both losses against the Switchbacks.

“The first goal is very valuable, and when you get it, you have something to fight for with the lead while the opposition has to change to pull themselves back into the game,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “Sometimes you have to weather the storm, but you also end up with more space to play in the other end.”

Following their match on the road, San Antonio FC will return home as they host OKC Energy FC at Toyota Field on the Fourth of July. The match will feature a postgame firework celebration, $1 beer and sodas presented by Bud Light, an ‘Extra Time’ postgame party, as well as the unveiling of a new third alternate jersey.
