NASHVILLE, Tenn. — With the battle for position in the top half of the USL's Eastern Conference proving tight, Indy Eleven's three-game winning streak has taken advantage of the large number of draws, 11 in the month of June, to move up to fourth place in the conference after Tuesday night's 2-0 victory against Nashville SC. A hard-working defense has been at the heart of the club's recent run of form, as opponents have struggled to figure out how to break down the Indy defense.

Indy has conceded just 15 goals all season and they have typically not come from a cross in from the wing, but rather short passing that catches out the Indy Eleven defense. The clearest example of this was the Charleston Battery's 3-3 draw at Lucas Oil Stadium on May 30, which saw the visitors scored all three goals from short passing sequences, two of which came after getting in behind the defense and cutting it back to the top of the penalty area.

That seemed to be something Nashville SC didn’t fully take advantage of on Wednesday night as it recorded 36 crosses in the match but only completed 11 of them successfully. Six of those successful crosses came from Lebo Moloto, but none resulted in a goal. That was largely due to impressive work from the Indy defense in the air, which finished the night with 36 clearances as the center back pairing of Karl Ouimette and Carlyle Mitchell recorded 20 clearances combined.

That defensive performance has parallels with the club's current three-game winning streak, which saw the Eleven record 22 clearances against Toronto FC II while winning 87.5 percent of the aerial duels and 16 clearances against ATL UTD 2 to start the recent run of form.

Against another in-form team in Penn FC on Saturday (7 p.m. ET | Match Center | ESPN+) Indy could well face a tough, and different test. Penn FC has been scoring goals through getting behind the defense, which is exactly how Charleston got goals. Lucky Mkosana has scored four goals in two games taking advantage of that type of targeted play, featured in Saturday’s USL Insights if the same happens this weekend Penn FC could keep that run going.
