Expanded Weidner Field welcomed 5,000 fans for first time to see dramatic victory

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following the offseason expansion of Weidner Field, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC welcomed a capacity crowd of 5,000 fans to its home venue for the first time on Saturday night, and the fans were treated to a dramatic victory for the hosts against Fresno FC that saw Shane Malcolm’s late free kick earn a 1-0 win.

With both the Switchbacks and Foxes fighting for position in the race for the USL Cup Playoffs, the result was a big one for Colorado Springs as it reached the midway point of its regular season. Still in the eighth and final playoff place, the Switchbacks were thrilled to come out on top.

“It was an exciting game,” said Switchbacks midfielder Jordan Burt. “I think we played well all game and we were struggling to find a goal and for it to come in the 86th minute was just amazing, I'm really excited for the guys.”

Here are some of the sights and sounds from a big night for the Switchbacks.
