T2 goalkeeper’s diving stop against San Antonio earns top spot in weekly poll

TAMPA, Fla. – Portland Timbers 2 goalkeeper Alex Mangels has claimed the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 12 of the 2018 season as his excellent diving save on the road against San Antonio FC last Saturday night finished top of the weekly online poll.

Mangels had to react quickly early in the contest as a San Antonio attack saw a pass laid back to Mikey Lopez at the edge of the penalty area. The SAFC midfielder fired a strong first-time shot toward the top-left corner of the net, but Mangels went at full stretch to punch the ball away with his right hand to keep the game scoreless.

Mangels’ save earned 38 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Friday. Nashville SC’s Matt Pickens finished second with 28 percent for an outstanding reaction save that denied a header by Penn FC’s Ken Tribbett, while Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC’s Dan Lynd finished third with 20 percent as he produced a good low stop to keep out a flicked header by Richmond Kickers forward Heviel Cordoves.
