Allen scores on debut for club in 3-1 victory; Battery advance on Wild's late goal

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Brandon Allen marked his debut for Nashville SC with a goal as the hosts took a 3-1 victory against the Premier Development League’s Mississippi Brilla to advance to the Fourth Round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.

Allen, who was unveiled as one of Nashville’s new signings from Bethlehem Steel FC on Tuesday, scored in the 19th minute as Tucker Hume set up his new teammates for his third goal in all competitions this season. Hume stole possession before breaking in on goal and drawing the goalkeeper before laying a ball across to Allen for a low finish past a pair of trailing defenders.

Nashville had the chance to add to its lead from the penalty spot five minutes later only for Mississippi goalkeeper Jordan Bell to make an outstanding save to keep Allen from his second goal of the night, but on the half-hour mark London Woodbury fired home from 25 yards to double Nashville’s lead.

Brilla FC pulled a goal back 15 minutes into the second half when a cross by Christian Kirchhoff found Napo Matsoso for a headed finish, but while the PDL side pushed to find an equalizer late on, NSC put the game away in stoppage time as Robin Shroot scored his first goal for the club to seal victory and a matchup with MLS opposition.

FRESNO FC 2, SPORTING AZ FC 1 (AET): The Foxes rallied to take victory in extra time against Sporting AZ FC at John Riggs Stadium in Mesa, Ariz. as Danny Barrera and Renato Bustamante found the net for the visitors. Sporting took the lead in the 66th minute as Ryan Flood found the net with a low, driven finish to the bottom-right corner, but Barrera equalized with 15 minutes to go with a finish from 25 yards out for his first for the club. Bustamante then gave the Foxes the lead nine minutes into extra time, and while the hosts pushed to try and find an equalizer, Fresno held firm defensively to advance to the Fourth Round.

CHARLESTON BATTERY 1, ELM CITY EXPRESS 0: The Battery advanced to the Fourth Round as Gordon Wild’s goal with seven minutes to go made the difference at MUSC Health Stadium. Wild ran onto a through-ball by Ataulla Guerra as he drove into the right side of the penalty area and produced a roofed finish from a narrow angle to give Charleston victory as the Battery advanced to the Fourth Round for the third time in the past four seasons.

FC GOLDEN STATE FORCE 2, LAS VEGAS LIGHTS FC 1: Lights FC’s first Open Cup foray came to an end in dramatic fashion as the Premier Development League’s Force scored a late penalty kick to claim victory at Layne Stadium in Downey, Calif. All of the action arrived in the final 20 minutes as Golden State took the lead through Allisson Faramilio, but Lights FC hit back through defender Joel Huiqui from a corner kick in the 81st minute. Faramilio was the hero for the Force, though, as he converted from the penalty spot in the final minute to send the PDL side through.
