PITTSBURGH – FC Cincinnati advanced to the Fourth Round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as two goals in two minutes in the second half by Lance Laing and Daniel Haber sent the side through against fellow USL side Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC 3-1 at Highmark Stadium on Wednesday night.

Neither side had created many clear chances before Cincinnati took the lead six minutes before the halftime break, when a clever piece of buildup saw Emery Welshman lift a pass into the left side of the penalty area that found Jimmy McLaughlin breaking forward, and the midfielder released a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal to provide Cincinnati with a halftime advantage.

Pittsburgh almost replied just before the hour-mark when Christiano François made a run down the right and sent his cross into the penalty area. Cincinnati defender Sem de Wit’s mishit clearance caromed off the crossbar, but Pittsburgh forward Neco Brett was unable to take advantage of the rebound as he shot high.

FCC made the Hounds pay for the miss in the 61st minute when Laing powered home a free kick from 30 yards that doubled the lead for the visitors. Daniel Haber then made it three a minute later pounced on a defensive mistake to put home his finish.

Riverhounds SC pulled a goal back with two minutes to go as Dennis Chin scored his first goal for the club as he put home the rebound after a run and shot by Andrew Lubahn was parried by FCC goalkeeper Spencer Richey, allowing Chin to capitalize, but that would be as close as Pittsburgh would get as FCC closed out the victory to reach the Fourth Round.
