CHARLESTON, S.C. – Maxime Crepeau saved a penalty kick early in the second half as Ottawa Fury FC earned a 0-0 draw with the Charleston Battery on Saturday night at MUSC Health Stadium. Both sides had back-to-back chances midway through the first half as the Battery’s Skylar Thomas headed just wide from a free kick and Fury FC’s Kevin Oliveira shot wide of the right post from outside the penalty area a minute apart, but Charleston was awarded a penalty kick in the 50th minute after a handball in the penalty area. Crepeau came up big for the visitors, however, and made an initial save on Ataulla Guerra’s low shot to the right corner before recovering to turn aside Nico Rittmeyer on the rebound. The Battery’s Neveal Hackshaw headed just over the crossbar moments later, while Ottawa’s Carl Haworth just missed the top-right corner with a free kick in the 54th minute. Both sides had chances as the second half progressed, but neither was able to break the deadlock as the Battery’s four-game league-winning streak came to an end.

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Ottawa claimed a big point on the road thanks to goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, who recorded his fourth consecutive shutout thanks to an exceptional double-save early in the second half to keep the Battery off the board from the penalty spot. The two saves on Ataulla Guerra’s initial penalty kick and Nico Rittmeyer’s follow-up effort were the only two the Canadian international had to make on the night, but in a tight contest they allowed the visitors to extend their undefeated streak to four games.

  • 2. The Battery were unable to find a breakthrough, and while they’ll rue the missed chance from the penalty spot there were enough narrow misses elsewhere from set pieces that the hosts could have grabbed all three points had things gone slightly differently. While the club’s streak of four successive league wins is at an end, though, the Battery are now undefeated in seven games and looking worthy of their top-three status in the Eastern Conference.

  • 3. Fury FC center back Colin Falvey was always going to have a spotlight on him in his first trip to MUSC Health Stadium as a visitor, and the former Battery stalwart put in a solid display at the back to help the defensive effort Ottawa put in overall. The 2013 USL Defender of the Year for the Battery, Falvey recorded five clearances while notching two interceptions and one tackle as he marshaled the back line in a matchup with a good Battery attack.
