CINCINNATI – Emery Welshman scored a hat trick as FC Cincinnati advanced to the Third Round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 4-1 victory after extra time against Detroit City FC on Wednesday night in front of a sellout crowd of 2,250 fans at the University of Cincinnati’s Gettler Stadium.

Welshman’s hat trick was the first of his professional career and the Guyana international also an assist to factor in all four goals for the hosts.

Cincinnati will head to face fellow USL club Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC next Wednesday night at Highmark Stadium in the Third Round, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ET.

Detroit took a surprise lead in the 31st minute when Shawn Lawson opened the scoring, but four minutes later Welshman headed home from close range to get Cincinnati back on level terms. Despite carrying the bulk of the play in the second half, however, FCC was unable to find a breakthrough as the game went to extra time.

Four minutes into the additional 30 minutes, however, Corben Bone broke the game open as he put home Welshman’s pass from the end line to give Cincinnati the lead. Welshman then added goals in the 99th and 110nd minutes, the second off an assist by Jimmy McLaughlin, as FCC pulled away to take victory.
