SAN ANTONIOSan Antonio FC needed Diego Restrepo to make some big plays to get the result on Saturday, and the netminder was able to perform, as the home side recorded a 2-1 victory against Fresno FC in front of 7,342 fans at Toyota Field that ended the Foxes' undefeated streak at seven games. San Antonio took the lead in the 20th minute, when Alex Bruce scored his first goal with a sliding finish after a sizzling cross into the box from Darnell King. Fresno finally found a goal in the 63rd minute, when Jemal Johnson finished the opportunity following a beautiful backheel pass from Rodolfo. However, Fresno defender Kyle Reynish conceded an own goal four minutes later to give the home side the lead once again. Restrepo made important plays late into the match to secure the win for San Antonio. With the result, San Antonio improves to 3-2-3 this campaign, while Fresno is now 2-2-5 in 2018.

Scoring:

20’ – SA – Alex Bruce (Darnell King)
63’ – FRS – Jemal Johnson (Rodolfo)
67’ – SA – Kyle Reynish (Own Goal)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Diego Restrepo continues to show why he is one of the key influencers for San Antonio this season. The goalkeeper recorded four saves, two clearances, two punches and one interception on the night to help his side record its third win of the season. Restrepo’s best denial occurred late into the match, as he came off his line to thwart a scoring chance and had to hurry back to his goal before a shot was fired on frame. He was able to push the effort wide to secure the result.

  • 2. Fresno’s unbeaten run ends at an impressive seven games. Once again, it was Jemal Johnson who had the biggest impact for Fresno, scoring his team-high fourth goal of the season while recording four key passes against San Antonio. While production is there for Fresno, as the team has only been held scoreless once this year, it has had a difficult time preventing its opposition from scoring – Fresno has two shutouts in nine games played. If the team wants to start recording wins instead of draws – Fresno has tied five games this season – then its defense needs to adapt.

  • 3. While his name did not appear on the score sheet, it was easy to see the impact Rafael Castillo had on the game for San Antonio. The midfielder made two interceptions, one clearance and four tackles while completing 82.6 percent of his passes against Fresno. Almost all attacking efforts down the field started with Castillo in the middle, and the midfielder contributed on the defensive side – winning five of six duels – to ensure his team earned all three points.
