CINCINNATI – Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC remained undefeated in the 2018 USL regular season after earning a quality 2-2 result against FC Cincinnati in front of 24,505 at Nippert Stadium on Saturday evening. Jordan Dover scored the first goal of the match for Pittsburgh in the sixth minute, gathering the ball down the right wing before forcing his way into the box and hitting a right-footed blast by Cincinnati goalkeeper Evan Newton, who was able to touch the ball as it went by but was unable to stop it from crossing the line. However, for each goal the Hounds were able to produce, Cincinnati had an answer. Down 1-0 at halftime, the home side came out of the gates with better energy as it searched for an equalizer and finally found it in the 59th minute, when Danni Konig received a pass from Corben Bone before hitting a right-footed shot past Pittsburgh netminder Daniel Lynd. Thomas Vancaeyezeele scored Pittsburgh’s second in the 73rd minute, though, hitting a low blast past Newton after receiving a pass from Kenardo Forbes to silence the large crowd on hand. But Cincinnati kept fighting, and Kenney Walker smashed in the game-tying goal in the 78th minute after the ball fell to his feet in the center of the penalty area. With the result, the Hounds move to 2-0-3 on the year, while Cincinnati is now 2-1-2.

Scoring:
6’ – PGH – Jordan Dover
59’ – CIN – Danni Konig (Corben Bone)
73’ – PGH – Thomas Vancaeyezeele (Kenardo Forbes)
78’ – CIN – Kenney Walker

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. The shutout streak ends for the Hounds, but the unbeaten run continues. After four consecutive clean sheets to start the season, Pittsburgh allowed Cincinnati’s Danni Konig and Kenney Walker to record goals in the second half, yet fans shouldn’t be too disappointed with the performance, as Nippert Stadium is not an easy place to record a positive result. The point is another feather in the cap to this side’s, thus far, impressive campaign.

  • 2. Cincinnati is winless in four consecutive matches, having tied three straight after falling to Louisville City FC on April 7. You could make the argument that Cincinnati should have walked away from Nippert Stadium with all three points on Saturday, especially given the team’s 63.8 percent possession throughout the match. However, two defensive lapses were the downfall, as the Cincinnati faithful will have to wait until May 5 before its next opportunity to earn its first home win of the season.

  • 3. Saturday’s goal could prove to be a turning point for Danni Konig in 2018. The former OKC Energy FC standout was a key figure for Cincinnati last season, but he had yet to score a goal until the 59th minute, when he drilled a shot past Pittsburgh goalkeeper Daniel Lynd. Konig was due a goal, and the signs were there, as he had a decent opportunity to grab his first of the season three minutes before that tally, but his effort went over the crossbar. He remained calm and collected, though, and finished the next opportunity. He was a menace all game long, and fans will be hoping he can continue to score at will, as the team looks to snap out of a winless run.
