HARTFORD, Conn. – Hartford’s Dillon Stadium took a major step toward becoming the home for a new USL club in the 2019 season on Monday night when the Hartford City Council unanimously approved plans for the renovation of the historic venue that would allow the Hartford Sports Group to launch a franchise that would kick off next spring.

The plans, the framework for which had been previously agreed upon by the Hartford Sports Group, City of Hartford and Capital Region Development Authority before being put before the City Council, will result in a $10 million overhaul that will see new seating, locker rooms, press box and restrooms and a new turf field installed at the venue. The funds will also provide for upgrades to the surrounding area of Colt Park.

“After years of hard work and diligent planning, we knew that this was the moment for Dillon Stadium and are grateful to receive approval to move forward,” said Bruce Mandell, President of the Hartford Sports Group. “This iconic community asset has languished for far too long, and we look forward to restoring it to its rightful place within the cultural fabric of Hartford.

“We thank the Hartford City Council, as well as the Governor, the Mayor’s Office, and the CRDA for working to make this a reality. This project will bring tremendous benefit to our community and our children for years to come. We are excited to share additional announcements with the Hartford community in the upcoming weeks.”

The project had previously received $10 million in funding from the state bond commission, while Hartford Sports Group had committed to spend between $7 to $10 million to bring the USL to the city. Those plans now appear set to come to fruition after the Council’s approval of the agreement.

“Our city deserves it, our residents deserve it,” Council Minority Leader Wildaliz Bermudez told the Hartford Courant on Monday night. “It’s time to make sure that the stadium – Dillon – actually gets used in a constructive way.”
