SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC announced on Wednesday that the club has signed Slovenian midfielder Jure Matjašič for the 2018 season, with a club option for the 2019 season.
“Jure has played at a high level in Europe, and we are excited to integrate that experience into our team.,” said Republic FC General Manager Todd Dunivant. “He combines very well with his teammates and will help our team in possession and in the attack.”
Matjašič joins Republic FC after spending the past two seasons with NK Domzale in Slovenia’s First Division, the Prva Liga. The 25-year-old midfielder can play on either wing, and made 32 appearances for NK Domzale, including four starts in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds. He scored two goals and added three assists for the club in that span.
A native of Ptuj, Slovenia, Matjašič has also represented his national team, earning a cap in their friendly against Turkey on June 5, 2016. He will be the first Slovenian-born player in Republic FC’s history.
