Former U20 international was selected in 2018 MLS SuperDraft by Whitecaps FC

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno Football Club announced on Tuesday the club had signed former New Zealand U20 international Cory Brown for the 2018 USL season. A former member of the Premier Development League’s Michigan Bucks, Brown was selected in the Third Round of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft by the Foxes’ MLS partner Vancouver Whitecaps FC in January.

Brown joins fellow Whitecaps FC prospects Matthew Baldisimo, Terran Campbell, Sean Melvin, and Noah Verhoeven at Fresno FC.

“Cory has demonstrated himself as a talented footballer who has excelled consistently at the collegiate level here in the States,” said Fresno FC General Manager Frank Yallop. “He's a strong center back who will add more depth to our spine. He was drafted by our MLS affiliate because they believe he can excel at the professional level, and we're thrilled to be a part of the next stage in his career.”

The 21-year-old Brown moved to the United States since 2014, when he moved to Cincinnati to attend Xavier University. He was a four-year starter and captained the team in his final two seasons while making 80 starts and appearances throughout his career. Brown tallied five goals and nine assists for the Musketeers, was a four-time All Big East Conference selection, three of which were First Team selections, and was named the 2016 Big East's Defensive Player of the Year.

On the international stage, Brown represented his native New Zealand at the U17 and U20 National Team-level, including being named to the squad for the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup in his home country as he made four appearances in the tournament.
