League’s modern-era goal-scoring leader had 66 goals over past seven seasons

WASHINGTON, D.C. – 2017 USL Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot-winner Dane Kelly has signed with D.C. United, the club announced on Friday, with the former Reno 1868 FC standout heading to Major League Soccer for the first time in his career.

Kelly scored 18 goals to lead the league for the first time in his USL career for 1868 FC a season ago, helping the expansion club set a USL regular-season record with 75 goals on its way to a third-place finish in the Western Conference. The performance earned Kelly his third All-League selection in addition to his two awards.

“Dane has an impressive goalscoring record in the USL and is deserving of his shot in MLS,” Dave Kasper, United General Manager said. “He will provide us with more attacking depth and we are excited to welcome him to the club.”

Kelly is the all-time goal-scoring leader in the USL’s modern era, with 66 goals in 161 appearances. His performance for Reno a season ago earned his first call-up to the Jamaican Men’s National Team, where he made his debut as a starter in an international friendly against Canada on Sept. 3, 2017. He scored his first goal and first assist for the Reggae Boyz in a 2-2 draw in an international friendly against South Korea on Jan. 30 earlier this year.

“Dane’s contributions to our club’s incredible success during our inaugural season goes without saying,” said Reno 1868 FC General Manager Andy Smith. “He brought veteran leadership to our locker room and cemented a lifelong legacy here in Reno.

“We are excited that he gets to showcase his talents in MLS and wish him all the best in the next chapter in an already storied career.”
