Season produced memorable highs, but too many lows for postseason berth

Ottawa Fury FC’s first season in the USL had some notable highs, but the club’s inability to string together consecutive results cost the team from Canada’s capital down the stretch as it finished six points out of the playoff positions in the Eastern Conference as it won only once in its final 12 league games.

But while there was disappointment in the league, Fury FC produced well in the Canadian Championship, first eliminating FC Edmonton before taking a victory at TD Place against Toronto FC that, while it would be overturned in the second leg at BMO Field, produced a remarkable night for its fans and highlighted what the side could be capable of if it can find more consistency in the 2018 season.

2017 USL SEASON IN REVIEW

Record: 8-14-10, 38pts
Place: 10th in the Eastern Conference
Goals For: 42
Goals Against: 41
USL Cup Playoffs: Did not qualify

2017 leaders: Steevan Dos Santos (10 goals) Carl Haworth (5 assists), Callum Irving (78 saves)

WHAT WENT RIGHT

The club’s offseason moves paid some dividends, with Steevan Dos Santos leading the club with 10 goals and goalkeeper Callum Irving slotting capably into the starting goalkeeping position as he played every minute of the regular season. Another newcomer, Sito Seoane, also played a solid role in the club’s Canadian Championship success as Fury FC won both legs against Edmonton before falling to eventual MLS Cup-winners Toronto FC in the semifinals.

WHAT WENT WRONG

Ottawa seemed to take one step forward and two steps back too often in league action, with the club only able to string together back-to-back wins once in two high-scoring victories against the New York Red Bulls II and Richmond Kickers, both of which saw the side rally to take all three points. The biggest frustration came down the stretch, however, when the side ran together five consecutive draws as it looked to get into the playoff picture. The inability to turn one point into three in those contests, three of which were at TD Place, ended up being key to the side missing out on the postseason.

GOAL OF THE SEASON

Fury FC had plenty of great goals to choose from, but Sito Seoane’s outstanding turning finish from 40 yards out that looped over the goalkeeper against Toronto FC II at TD Place was one of the best goals of the season overall.

SAVE OF THE SEASON

Callum Irving’s denial of first Florian Valot and then Andrew Tinari of the New York Red Bulls II kept Fury FC’s deficit at one goal in the 90th minute at TD Place, a fact that would be crucial as Ottawa rallied with a stoppage-time equalizer.
