Defensive Duo Returns for Rising FC

Wakasa, Vasquez combined for 50 starts in 2017 season for club

PHOENIX – A pair of key defensive pieces will be back with Phoenix Rising FC in 2018 as the club announced on Monday that both Victor Vasquez and Kody Wakasa would return to the club for a second season.

Both players made 25 starts in the 2017 season as Rising FC reached the USL Cup Playoffs for the first time, with Wakasa finishing third on the club with 2,287 minutes of action. The 23-year-old finished second on the club with 54 interceptions, third on the club with 123 duels won, and won a team-leading 40 of 56 tackles in his first professional season in addition to contributing four assists at the attacking end of the field.

“I’m ecstatic to re-sign and see how we progress next season,” Wakasa said.

Vasquez finished fifth on Rising FC with 2,180 minutes, and recorded 37 interceptions and 42 clearances in his first season with the club. A former player for FC Golden State in the PDL, Vasquez won 25 of 38 tackles in his first professional season, while offensively he recorded 21 key passes.

“I’m really excited to be coming back to Phoenix,” Vasquez said. “The club, the fans, the team chemistry, everything was amazing last year and I know things are only going to keep growing. Its an honor to be a part of this organization, and I'm looking forward to this next upcoming year.”
