SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC sealed second place in the USL Western Conference following a 3-1 win against South Texas rivals Rio Grande Valley FC in front of 7,604 fans at Toyota Field on Saturday night. An error from Rio Grande Valley FC goalkeeper Calle Brown allowed the opener for SAFC, as Brown's attempt to keep the ball in play had too much power and allowed SAFC's Billy Forbes to sneak in and simply walk the ball into the back of the net in the 29th minute. Just four minutes later SAFC doubled its lead as Ever Guzman continued his impressive run of form. Omar Gordon sent a perfect square ball, allowing Guzman to slide in and score easily. The Toros got a perfect start to the second half as SAFC failed to clear with Eric Bird able to pop up and slam the ball home from the top of the penalty area. But the two early SAFC scorers linked up to restore the two-goal cushion as Forbes was able to get possession and shoot, seemingly wide, only for Guzman to pop up and slide it home, giving SAFC a 3-1 lead. Any hopes of an RGVFC comeback ended when Jose Escalante kicked Gordon and earned a straight red card in the 73rd minute, helping SAFC cruise to the win.

Scoring:
29’ – SA – Billy Forbes
33’ – SA – Ever Guzman (Omar Gordon)
47’ – RGV – Eric Bird
59’ – SA – Ever Guzman (Billy Forbes)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. By scoring the opening goal of the match Billy Forbes became the first San Antonio FC player to score double-digit goals in a single season. The goal was his 10th of the season and thus the 10th he has scored for the club, seeing him overtake Rafael Castillo, with nine goals, as the all-time SAFC goal scoring leader. After going nine matches without scoring, Forbes has now scored three goals in his last five matches, hitting some form ahead of the USL Cup Playoffs.

  • 2. Mexican forward Ever Guzman looks to have found his feet in San Antonio, with two goals in this match taking giving him four in the past three matches. That gives Guzman the second-longest scoring streak for SAFC players this season, behind Forbes who had four straight early in the season. Guzman scoring has been a good omen for SAFC. Since joining the club in August San Antonio FC hasn't lost when Guzman scores.

  • 3. It may have been a disappointing season for Rio Grande Valley FC but one trend which has them near the top of the league continued in this match as the Toros scored their ninth goal from outside the penalty area. That puts the Toros in a tie for second in the league in goals from outside the box, giving them the highest percentage of goals from outside the box with nine from an overall total of 38.
