Real Monarchs SLC news and notes

  • Current record: 19-5-7, 64pts

  • The Monarchs played to a 1-1 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 last Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium to clinch the 2017 USL Regular Season Championship.

  • Sebastian Velasquez scored in the first half for the Monarchs goal to open the scoring, but an own goal by Real defender James Moberg and a red card given to Demar Phillips left the game level.

  • The Monarchs' Chandler Hoffman enters the final game of the regular season sitting on 16 goals, two back of current USL Golden Boot leader Dane Kelly of Reno 1868 FC.

  • The Monarchs' draw against Vancouver meant the side would be unable to equal the USL single-season record of 69 points and 21 wins set last year by the New York Red Bulls II.

  • Real is undefeated in its last four games, and will prepare to host the No. 8-seed – one of Tulsa Roughnecks FC, OKC Energy FC or Sacramento Republic FC – next Friday night in the Western Conference Quarterfinals of the USL Cup Playoffs.

LA Galaxy II news and notes

  • Current record: 8-18-5, 31pts

  • The Galaxy II come into this match following an impressive 3-2 victory against the Portland Timbers 2 in its final home game of the season last Saturday night at StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium.

  • Los Dos came from behind to take the lead on goals by Ariel Lassiter, Jack McBean, but the side needed a late winner from Jeffrey Payeras to earn victory in stoppage time in front of a sellout crowd.

  • The victory ended a six-match winless run for Los Dos, who will miss the postseason for the first time in their history this season.

  • The Galaxy II's win against Portland also saw the debut of 15-year-old prodigy Efrain Alvarez, who recorded an assist as he became the youngest player to compete in the USL's history, surpassing the record held by former Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 standout Alphonso Davies.

Series Notes

  • The Galaxy II lead the all-time series between the two sides with a 2-1-2 record, but the lone Monarchs win came this season in a 3-0 win on May 10 at StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium.
