Riverhounds goalkeeper produced big reflex save to earn weekly honor

TAMPA, Fla. – Pittsburgh Riverhounds goalkeeper Matt Perrella has grabbed the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 29 of the 2017 season as his excellent low save against the Rochester Rhinos at Highmark Stadium finished top of the weekly online poll.

Perrella returned to the Riverhounds for his second stint at the club after a spate of injuries left Pittsburgh in need of cover in goal for the remainder of the season. On Saturday night against rival the Rochester Rhinos, the 26-year-old produced a tremendous reflex save to deny standout Rhinos forward Jochen Graf’s flicked header, and then recovered to pressure the rebound attempt that caromed off the post and away to safety.

Perrella earned 43 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday morning. Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 goalkeeper Mark Village finished second with 37 percent for an excellent low stop that kept Real Monarchs SLC’s Daniel Haber from finding the left corner of the net, and Phoenix Rising FC’s Josh Cohen finished third for a second week in a row with 21 percent as he went at full stretch to preserve a shutout with a fingertip save on Rio Grande Valley FC’s Todd Wharton on Saturday night.
