Battery look to regain second place as City Islanders visit

CHARLESTON, S.C. – While the race for top spot in the USL Eastern Conference is over the race for second is on with any of four teams capable of taking the No. 2-seed in the postseason. The Charleston Battery are one of those teams, and will have a chance to take a big step to taking that spot on Saturday when they host the Harrisburg City Islanders at MUSC Health Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Charleston Battery news and notes

  • Current record: 13-8-9, 48pts

  • The Battery notched an impressive comeback for a 1-1 draw against Ottawa Fury FC last Sunday in their most recent outing.

  • After conceding in the 16th minute, the Battery went down a man in the 59th minute when Forrest Lasso was sent off, but Heviel Cordoves continued his strong run of form, scoring the equalizer with five minutes to play.

  • Cordoves' goal was his fourth in the past three games for the Battery, and the Cuban forward has been nominated for the USL Player of the Month award for September.

  • The draw against Ottawa was the second straight match without a win for the Battery, who enter the weekend in third place in the Eastern Conference a point behind the Tampa Bay Rowdies with two games to go.

Harrisburg City Islanders news and notes

  • Current record: 10-14-7, 37pts

  • The City Islanders come into this match following a 2-0 win against Saint Louis FC last Saturday night at FNB Field.

  • Manolo Sanchez opened the scoring just four minutes into the match before Ropapa Mensah sealed the match in the 75th minute.

  • Mensah's goal was his fifth in six games in the month of September, which saw the 19-year-old Ghanaian nominated for the USL Player of the Month award. Mensah be unavailable for selection on Saturday, however, as he serves a one-game suspension for caution accumulation.

  • Despite the win, the City Islanders were eliminated from playoff contention due to other results on the weekend. Saturday's game will conclude their 2017 season.

Series Notes

  • The Battery leads the all-time series between the two sides with a 10-4-1 record, largely thanks to a recent dominance in the series, having not lost to the City Islanders since July 5th 2014.
