Top-shelf free kick for Republic FC claims top spot in weekly poll

TAMPA, Fla. – Sacramento Republic FC standout Emrah Klimenta has claimed the USL Fans’ Choice Goal of the Week for Week 28 of the 2017 season, as his outstanding free kick against Phoenix Rising FC this past Saturday night in Sacramento’s home regular-season finale at Papa Murphy’s Park took top spot in the weekly online poll.

With Republic FC in need of a victory to boost its push to reach the USL Cup Playoffs, and the game scoreless at halftime, Klimenta stepped up and produced a curling free kick from 25 yards that picked out the top-left corner. The goal proved the game-winner in a 2-0 victory as Sacramento ended Rising FC’s 11-game undefeated streak.

Klimenta’s goal earned 41 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday morning. The Swope Park Rangers’ Lebo Moloto finished second with 35 percent for his standout finish off a give-and-go with Christian Duke in a 3-0 victory against the LA Galaxy II last Wednesday night, while Charleston Battery forward Heviel Cordoves finished third for an outstanding solo effort that provided a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw with Ottawa Fury FC with 16 percent.
