Monarchs goalkeeper’s standout penalty kick save earns weekly honor

TAMPA, Fla. – Real Monarchs SLC goalkeeper Andrew Putna has earned the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 28 of the 2017 season as his penalty-kick save to preserve a shutout against Sacramento Republic FC finished top of the weekly online poll.

Making only his second start of the season, Putna was called upon late as Sacramento tried to cut into the Monarchs’ two-goal lead after being awarded a penalty kick. Putna got down well to save Sammy Ochoa’s penalty kick to the right corner of the net, controlling the rebound to allow his defense to clear. The save was one of two penalty-kick stops by Putna in Week 28 as he was also named to the USL Team of the Week.

Putna earned 71 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday morning. Orlando City B goalkeeper Jake Fenlason finished second with 16 percent for an excellent diving save to deny a good free kick by the Richmond Kickers’ Sunny Jane on Sunday that proved key in a 1-0 win for OCB, and Phoenix Rising FC’s Josh Cohen finished third with 10 percent for an excellent reflex stop to deny a close-range header by Sacramento Republic FC’s Chris Christian on Saturday night.
