Rising FC midfielder’s deft chip in Vancouver claims top spot in weekly poll

TAMPA, Fla. – Phoenix Rising FC midfielder Alessandro Riggi has claimed the USL Fans’ Choice Goal of the Week for Week 27 of the 2017 season, as his deft chip against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Sunday afternoon that helped pave the way to an emphatic victory on the road took top spot in the weekly online poll.

Riggi finished as the runner-up in voting for the USL Player of the Week earlier this week as he notched two goals and two assists in Rising FC’s pair of road victories. His perfect first-time chip of WFC2 goalkeeper Sean Melvin in the eighth minute of Sunday’s game at Thunderbird Stadium, capping off a strong counterattack, proved the highlight in a 4-0 victory that saw Phoenix continue its outstanding recent run of form.

Riggi’s goal earned 46 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Thursday morning. Rio Grande Valley FC’s Jose Escalante finished second with 33 percent for his remarkable chipped finish against San Antonio FC that earned the Toros a 1-0 win at Toyota Field last Saturday night, while Reno 1868 FC’s Lindo Mfeka’s long-range blast against OKC Energy FC last Wednesday night – part of a hat trick for the USL Player of the Week – took third with 10 percent.
