HARRISBURG, Pa. – Harrisburg City Islanders defender Abass Mohammed has earned his first selection to the Ghana National Team as he was named in a 26-player squad on Tuesday for the country’s upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Uganda on Oct. 7.

Mohammed is one of three U.S.-based players selected to the squad, with Columbus Crew SC’s Harrison Afful and Jonathan Mensah also named. The 23-year-old Mohammed is also one of five players named in the full national team squad for the first time.

Mohammed has made 19 appearances for the City Islanders in his first season with the club, and leads the team with 61 tackles at an 81.3 percent success rate. Mohammed also sits third on the team with 53 interceptions, and has averaged 42.6 passes per 90 minutes.

Ghana is in serious need of victory to keep its hopes of advancing to the 2018 FIFA World Cup alive when it faces Uganda, as the side sits in third place in Group E’s standings, four points back of group-leader Egypt.
