PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Riverhounds have announced goalkeeper Trey Mitchell will miss the remainder of the 2017 season. Mitchell will undergo surgery on his left shoulder to repair an injury sustained during last weekend’s match at Saint Louis FC.

"We’re really sorry both for the team and for Trey personally,” Riverhounds Head Coach Dave Brandt said. “He's had an excellent year in goal for us, and while we're sorry his season needs to end early, we realize at this point that he needs to get the problem in his shoulder fixed and begin to prepare for next season right away."

Mitchell’s injury came as result of his penalty-saving effort in the 66th minute against Saint Louis FC, where he made a diving stop to his right with his left arm fully extended to keep the match level at 1-1. He previously injured his left shoulder this season after landing on it during pregame warmups on June 22 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies, causing him to miss four games in total.

Mitchell returned on July 22 to make five starts in the following six matches for the Hounds, including last weekend against Saint Louis FC. 

A native of Alta Loma, California, Mitchell started 17 matches total for the Hounds this season, posting a 6-6-5 record with a 0.94 goals-against average and .742 save percentage. He led the club in clean sheets with six – the best single-season total by a Hounds keeper in the past four seasons – and was also the first keeper to record three straight shutouts (April 29-May 3) since the 2011 season.

With only one active goalkeeper on the roster in Matt Perrella, the Hounds are currently exploring options to back up Perrella heading into this Saturday’s match against Bethlehem Steel FC.
