Battery goalkeeper’s reflex stop to deny Tampa Bay’s Joe Cole claims monthly honor

TAMPA, Fla. – Charleston Battery goalkeeper Alex Tambakis has earned the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Month for July of the 2017 season, with the 24-year-old’s excellent reflex save against the Tampa Bay Rowdies that claimed the USL Fans’ Choice Save of the Week in Week 18 earning the monthly award.

Tambakis has been a regular in goal for the Battery on loan from Atlanta United FC for the past two seasons, and against the Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium on July 22 produced another outstanding save for the club. With Tampa Bay pressuring, the ball came to former England international Joe Cole for a first-time finish in the center of the penalty area, but Tambakis reacted quickly to parry the shot to safety and allow the defense to clear.

Tambakis’ save received 54 percent of the poll conducted online at USLSoccer.com that concluded on Monday morning. San Antonio FC’s Diego Restrepo finished second with 23 percent for his outstanding full-stretch save to deny Phoenix Rising FC’s Didier Drogba, while the Charlotte Independence’s Cody Mizell finished third for his tremendous denial of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ Corey Hertzog at Highmark Stadium, which took 20 percent.
