Monarchs visits Energy FC with hosts looking to build on win

OKLAHOMA CITY – USL Western Conference-leader Real Monarchs SLC will look to maintain its eight-point lead at the top of the conference when it visits an OKC Energy FC team that is looking to build on a big midweek victory when the teams meet on Saturday night at Taft Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT.

OKC Energy FC news and notes

  • Current record: 7-8-5, 26pts

  • Energy FC took a 1-0 victory against Reno 1868 FC on Wednesday night in the USL Game of the Week at Taft Stadium to extend its undefeated streak to four games.

  • Forward Jose Angulo scored the only goal of the game as the win moved Energy FC into the eighth and final playoff place in the Western Conference.

  • Angulo’s goal was his third since arriving in OKC on loan from Saint Louis FC, and his seventh overall this season.

  • Energy FC has hit the post or crossbar a league-high 12 times this season, with Miguel Gonzalez and Alex Dixon both having hit the woodwork three times apiece.

Real Monarchs SLC news and notes

  • Current record: 15-2-3, 48pts

  • The Monarchs were held to a 0-0 draw on Monday night by Tulsa Roughnecks FC at Rio Tinto Stadium, the first time Real had been held scoreless at home this season.

  • The draw brought to an end Real’s 10-game home winning streak, but moved the side eight points clear of second-place San Antonio FC at the top of the Western Conference.

  • Attacking midfielder Sebastian Velasquez made his first start against the Roughnecks since suffering an injury in late May.

  • Monarchs forward Chandler Hoffman was one of the nominees for USL Player of the Month for July after recording five goals and two assists over the month.
