USL leading scorer notches first goal for Reggae Boyz against Curaçao

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – 2017 USL goal-scoring leader Romario Williams of the Charleston Battery scored his first goal for Jamaica to lead the Reggae Boyz to a 2-0 victory against Curaçao on Sunday evening at Qualcomm Stadium in the opening game of Group C in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

With the game scoreless just before the hour mark, Williams was played into the right side of the penalty area, saw space from a narrow angle at the near post and rifled home his finish to give Jamaica a 1-0 lead.

Jamaica added to its lead in the 73rd minute with another good finish by Portland Timbers forward Darren Mattocks, who controlled a cross by New York Red Bulls defender Kemar Lawrence centrally in the penalty area and put home a good finish into the top-left corner.

Williams was one of three USL players to see action for Jamaica in the win, with Tampa Bay Rowdies center back Damion Lowe also named in the starting lineup. Bethlehem Steel FC forward Cory Burke came on as a second-half substitute as Jamaica saw out the shutout win, with Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Andre Blake putting in a stellar display in goal.

Jamaica will next square off against Mexico on Thursday night in its second game of the group stage. It will close Group C against El Salvador next Sunday night.
