2013 USL Cup Final MVP opens scoring in 1-1 draw vs. Panama

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – 2013 USL Cup Final MVP Dom Dwyer scored his second goal in as many games for the United States Men’s National Team as the side opened the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 1-1 draw against Panama in front of a crowd of 47,622 at Nissan Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With the game scoreless entering the second half, Dwyer created space for himself at the near post after Kelyn Rowe cleverly created space on the left side five minutes after the break. A low cross found the Sporting Kansas City forward, and he sent a low first-time finish into the right corner of the net.

Dwyer – who claimed USL All-League honors on loan with Orlando City SC in 2013 after sharing the USL Golden Boot with 15 goals – opened his account for the U.S. in an exhibition against Ghana last week. His goal on Saturday was answered by Panama on the hour-mark as Miguel Camargo slid home a finish after Brad Guzan had saved an initial shot by Gabriel Torres

“Obviously we’re disappointed not to get three points,” said Dwyer. “There’s a lot to build on. It was very tough conditions today, but we’ll keep working on it.”

The crowd at Nissan Stadium was a record for a soccer game in the state of Tennessee, and a strong sign for the city as Nashville SC prepares to join the USL for the 2018 season.

The United States will next face Martinique on Wednesday night at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. for its second game in Group B at this year’s Gold Cup.
