PHOENIX – Phoenix Rising FC will take aim at matching its deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night when the club plays host to the San Francisco Deltas at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT, with the winner of the contest set to travel to San Jose to meet Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes in the Fourth Round on May 14.

Wednesday’s game will be the first meeting between Rising FC and the Deltas, a first-year professional club. Phoenix will be looking to match its deepest run in the Open Cup, which it achieved in 2014 after a victory against fellow USL club OKC Energy FC at this stage. The side welcomed the LA Galaxy to the desert that season, falling 2-1 as U.S. Men’s National Team forward Gyasi Zardes scored two second-half goals after Matt Kassel had given the hosts the lead.

Rising FC reached the third round this year by defeating the Premier Development League’s Fresno Fuego 3-1 on May 17 in Fresno, Calif. Kody Wakasa, Eric Avila, and Mike Seth scored for Rising FC in the victory.

In the club's most recent game, Phoenix claimed its first away victory in league play this season, coming from behind to knock off the LA Galaxy II, 2-1, at the StubHub Center Track and Field Stadium this past Saturday. Avila scored his first league goal for the club, while Jason Johnson registered his second goal of the season and an assist in the win. Johnson was named to the USL Team of the Week on Tuesday for his performance.

San Francisco is in its inaugural professional season, and defeated the PDL’s Burlingame Dragons 2-1 in the previous round to reach Wednesday’s game. Defender Reiner Ferreira and forward Tom Heinemann scored second-half goals for the Deltas that night after the side had gone behind to the Dragons at Cagan Stadium on the campus of Stanford University.

In league action, San Francisco has cooled off after a hot start; the team began the year 1-0-3 in league play, but the Deltas are winless and goalless in each of their last two games, a 3-0 loss away to Jacksonville Armada FC and a 0-0 draw with the New York Cosmos at home.

There is no prior history between the teams, with Wednesday’s fixture being their first all-time meeting. It will also be the first time Rising FC will face a team based in the Bay Area.
