SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Tuesday it will host Liga MX club Santos Laguna in an exhibition match at Toyota Field on July 8 at 7:30 p.m. CT. The match marks the first-ever international friendly for SAFC since the club’s inception prior to the 2016 USL season.

The July 8 match is included in the San Antonio FC Season Ticket Package, and individual game tickets will go on sale to the general public tomorrow at 10 a.m. Fans will be able to purchase tickets by visiting SanAntonioFC.com or by calling 210-444-5657.

Founded in 1988, Santos Laguna is one of the youngest yet most popular teams in Liga MX. The Coahuila club has won five first division titles, most recently winning the 2015 Clausura and the 2015 Campeon de Campeones match, which is contested by the winners of the Apertura and Clausura seasons. Santos also earned their first Copa MX title in 2014 after beating Puebla 4-2 in penalty kicks.

Santos has played in the CONCACAF Champions League final on two occasions, falling to Monterrey both times in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 editions of the competition. The club is also notorious for fielding Mexican legend and club all-time leading scorer Jared Borgetti from 1996 to 2004, as well as Mexican international team goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez from 2007 to 2014.

The Torreon-based club recently completed the 2016-17 Clausura season, finishing fifth in the standings with 26 points in 17 matches. After falling 4-1 to Toluca in the first leg of the Clausura playoff quarterfinals, Santos nearly made an impressive comeback, defeating Toluca 3-1 in the second leg and falling just short on aggregate.

The game marks the second consecutive year that Santos Laguna has played in the Alamo City, as well as the club’s second visit to Toyota Field. Santos played in San Antonio last July when they faced fellow Liga MX side Club America at the Alamodome, narrowly losing in penalty kicks. The club first visited Toyota Field in October in 2013, earning a 1-1 draw against Club Tijuana in a friendly match between the two sides.
