HARRISON, N.J. – New York Red Bulls II forward Douglas Martinez has been selected to represent Honduras at the upcoming FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea.
Martinez was a key member of the country’s advancement to the tournament as Honduras reached the final of the 2017 CONCACAF U20 Championship before falling to the United States. The 19-year-old started in five of six games at the tournament, scoring once.
Martinez departed on Tuesday for Honduras to join the squad. Honduras opens the tournament on May 22 against France. Los Catrachos will also face Vietnam and New Zealand in the group stage.
Martinez joined Red Bulls II on loan from Honduran first-division side CD Vida on April 26, 2017. He made his debut for the club this past Saturday against the Harrisburg City Islanders, scoring four minutes after being inserted as a 75th-minute substitute.
Martinez is the second player from the Red Bulls organization selected to compete at the FIFA U20 World Cup, with midfielder Tyler Adams – who was the first signing in New York Red Bulls II history before signing as a Homegrown Player with the club’s MLS squad – one of eight players with USL experience named in the United States’ squad for the tournament.
