International exhibition against Liga MX club serves as venue’s inaugural game

EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley FC will raise the curtain on the club’s new H-E-B Park when it hosts Liga MX side C.F. Monterrey on Wednesday, March 22 at 7 p.m. CT.

Rayados, as C.F Monterrey is commonly known, boasts a large fan-base and is one of the top teams in Liga MX. The club has won the Mexican league championship a total of four times, and claimed the CONCACAF Champions League on three consecutive occasions from 2011 to 2013. The club’s current squad includes Carlos Sanchez, Edwin Cardona, Dorlan Pabón, and Alfonso Gonzalez, a Reynosa born player who played in the youth soccer system in the Rio Grande Valley.

Led by head coach Othoniel “Junior” Gonzalez, the Toros will play their first ever international friendly. The match will be a historic milestone for the club and for H-E-B Park. After reaching the USL Cup Playoffs in their inaugural season, the Toros will seek to build on their success this season.

The stadium’s inaugural game is an example of the level of play and entertainment that H-E-B Park seeks to provide to the community.

“We are more than excited to inaugurate our H-E-B Park with an international friendly against a renowned team like Rayados,” said Toros President Bert Garcia. “One of the goals of the organization is to provide first-class entertainment to the Rio Grande Valley and we cannot wait to see the support of the community in the stands.”

The international exhibition will be the first game to be played at the 9,700-capacity stadium. Complete with full-kitchen concessions, an amphitheater, and luxury suites, H-E-B Park is a landmark new addition to the USL’s collection of soccer-specific stadiums.

The friendly against Rayados will be the final game of the preseason for the Toros, who will then open the 2017 USL regular season on Sunday, March 26 against in-state rival San Antonio FC.
