Brazilian sides square off in semifinals of 2017 Florida Cup Playoff in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – A pair of top Brazilian clubs will square off for a place in the final of the 2017 Florida Cup Playoff on Wednesday night when SC Corinthians Paulista and Vasco Da Gama meet at Bright House Networks Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Vasco Da Gama news and notes

  • Vasco rallied to earn a 2-1 victory against Ecuador’s Barcelona SC on Sunday to open the tournament as Rodrigo da Costa scored the winner with six minutes to go.

  • Da Costa was also involved in Vasco’s opening goal of the game, as he was brought down at a set piece, resulting in a penalty kick. Nene converted from the spot to make it 1-1 at the halftime break.

  • Nene led Vasco with 13 goals in the league a season ago as the side earned promotion back to Brazil’s Serie A, and was also named the Player of the Year as Vasco won the 2016 Campeonato Carioca.

  • Vasco will begin their quest for a third consecutive Campeonato Carioca next month when the tournament’s group stage kicks off.

SC Corinthians Paulista news and notes

  • Corinthians is coming off a seventh-place finish in Serie A in 2016 which saw the club qualify for the 2017 Copa Sudamericana.

  • The club is one of the most historic in Brazil, having claimed a pair of FIFA Club World Cup titles. The side has also won six league championships since 1990, the most recent coming in 2015.

  • Nicknamed Time do Povo, team of the people, Corinthians was founded by five railway workers in 1910. The club has won 27 Campeonato Paulista, its state competition, with the most recent coming in 2013.

  • This is the second consecutive season Corinthians has competed in the Florida Cup. Last year it took a 3-2 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk, and suffered a 1-0 loss to fellow Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro.
