CARSON, Calif. – Former USL A-League Golden Boot-winner and Rookie of the Year Alan Gordon had a goal and two assists as the LA Galaxy took a 3-1 victory against Real Salt Lake in the Knockout Round of the 2016 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs on Wednesday night at StubHub Center.

Gordon began his professional career with the Seattle Sounders in 2004, and claimed both the A-League’s Rookie of the Year award in addition to a share of the Golden Boot with 17 goals which tied him for the league-lead with Dante Washington.

Now 35 years old, Gordon made his first MLS Cup Playoffs start on Wednesday night, setting a record in the process. Via ESPN’s Paul Carr, Gordon had made the most appearances in the league’s postseason history (15) prior to his first start. The veteran forward made the most of it, opening the scoring from close range after a cross by Landon Donovan was flicked on at the near post by Giovani Dos Santos to set up Gordon’s finish in the 14th minute.

Real Salt Lake equalized seven minutes later from the penalty spot through Joao Plata, but the Galaxy regained the lead in the 26th minute when Gordon provided the assist on former Ventura County Fusion player Ema Boateng’s first goal of the night. The duo linked up again eight minutes later as Gordon’s pass allowed Boateng to break into the right side of the penalty area and finish low to the left corner.

Gordon left the game in the 52nd minute with a minor hip problem, but the Galaxy were optimistic he would be available for Sunday’s opening leg of the Western Conference Semifinals. “He’s fine. He’s not going to have a problem,” Coach Bruce Arena told media.

The Galaxy will face the Colorado Rapids at StubHub Center to open the two-legged home-and-home series.
