VANCOUVER B.C. – This season, six players from the province of Alberta have competed for Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 in the USL.

On Tuesday the Whitecaps unveiled a new player development partnership with the Alberta Soccer Association, which will include an academy center in Calgary that will hope to bring more players to the club’s professional ranks.

“We're ecstatic to be partnering with the Alberta Soccer Association,” said Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi. “The province has proven to be one of the top talent regions in the country, as we have already seen in our programs.”

Led by recent USL 20 Under 20 selection Alphonso Davies – who played for the Edmonton International and Edmonton Strikers prior to joining the Whitecaps Academy – the six players have combined for 37 appearances in the USL this season, with players like Jackson Farmer and Chris Serban now in their second seasons with the club.

The 15-year-old Davies, who this season became both the youngest player and youngest goal-scorer in USL history, was recently signed to an MLS Homegrown Player contract, highlighting the quality of player that could feature more regularly in Vancouver’s player development system.

“We are ecstatic to be able to implement and promote a formal partnership with an MLS club in Vancouver Whitecaps FC,” said Shaun Lowther, technical director for Alberta Soccer. “Whitecaps FC have shown their commitment to developing homegrown talent over the years and this partnership helps us to demonstrate a clear pathway for both male and female players in southern Alberta who are looking to advance to the next level of their soccer careers.”

With the establishment of the club’s academy center in Calgary, the Whitecaps will have Academy Centers in eight of 10 provinces across the country: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island. The organization also holds six current partnerships with provincial associations: British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island.
