VANCOUVER, B.C. – Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 and Seattle Sounders FC 2 played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon at Thunderbird Stadium, bringing S2’s four-game winning streak to an end. Seattle almost took the lead just three minutes in, but WFC2’s Sem De Wit cleared Myron Samuel’s header from a corner off the line, while Vancouver hit the post through Marco Bustos in the 11th minute. S2 took the lead nine minutes before the break, though, as Jordy Delem set up Zach Mathers for his second goal of the season. WFC2 hit back 10 minutes into the second half as Daniel Haber hit a turning shot into the left corner of the net, and Vancouver had the better of the second half overall. S2 had a pair of late chances to grab victory, but were unable to take advantage of either as honors finished even.

Scoring:
36’ – SEA – Zach Mathers (Jordy Delem)
55’ – VAN – Daniel Haber (Marco Bustos)

Three Things That Matter:

  • 1. Following Wednesday night’s loss, Vancouver will have been happy to get things relatively back on track, but will be disappointed it wasn’t able to unlock the S2 defense in the final half-hour, as the visitors did well to remain organized and clear most danger. A draw, however, pushes the door open again for the teams below WFC2 in the standings to take advantage, and as a compact as the top five is currently things could look very different by the time Coach Alan Koch’s side takes to the field against on Wednesday night.

  • 2. With the young talent on the side, and Kyle Greig leading the team with 10 goal this season, Daniel Haber could go a little bit overlooked for WFC2, but on Saturday he scored another excellent goal in what has been a good season for the side. Haber’s equalizer in the 55th minute was his seventh goal this season, and he has also added four assists coming in from the right side.

  • 3. S2’s four-game winning streak came to an end, and the side almost stole all three points in stoppage time when Myron Samuel twice had chances to earn victory. First, the St. Vincent & Grenadines forward stole in behind the defense, only to lift his finish over the top of the crossbar, and then had a low shot saved when his placement could have been better. Seattle’s undefeated streak continues, but with every point crucial in the battle for a place in the playoffs, the side might look back on its late chances with regret later this season.

USLSoccer.com Man of the Match

Jordy Delem, Seattle Sounders FC 2 – Delem’s outstanding interception in midfield and pass to set up Zach Mathers was inspired, but the defender also put in a solid shift to help limit WFC2’s chances after the game became level.

Seattle Sounders FC 2 at Rio Grande Valley FC – August 13, 8:30 p.m. ET, Toro Field
