SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Thursday the signing of 18-year-old local midfielder Diego Garcia

“We are excited to add a young local player in Diego to our roster,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He first impressed the staff at the open tryouts in February, and then completed his commitment with Lonestar SC in the U.S. Soccer Developmental Academy. He has been training and impressing in first team practices and is now available for our upcoming matches. He is focused on getting better and is a skillful wide player who we feel has a bright future ahead of him.”

An Academy standout with Lonestar SC, Garcia turns professional after making 19 appearances and recording four goals and one assist in the past USSF Development Academy season. Following the conclusion of the Developmental Academy season in May, the South Texas native began training with San Antonio FC for several months prior to joining the roster.

"I'm really excited to be part of this great organization and to join these great teammates, soccer players and coaching staff,” said Garcia. “It's a great opportunity. Not many guys get the chance to play professional soccer right out of high school here in the United States, so it means a lot to me. I'm ready for it."

Originally from Kyle, Texas, Garcia played one season at Lehman High School before spending several years with Lonestar SC in Austin, and the San Antonio Scorpions Academy in the Alamo City. During his one season with Lehman he was named Central Texas Newcomer of the Year, Lehman High School Offensive MVP, and earned First Team All-District, First Team All-Region and First Team All-State honors.
