Galaxy II striker scores twice in first half in win against Arizona

CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy II’s Ari Lassiter notched a first-half brace as Los Dos defeated Arizona United SC 2-0 on Saturday at StubHub Center to open the 2016 USL season.

Coming off a runner-up season last year, the Galaxy II opened this new campaign on a positive note as Lassiter earned a PK and then scored in the run of play in the span of about 20 minutes.

After he was tripped up early in the first half by Uchenna Uzo, Lassiter converted his own PK attempt in the 10th minute, slotting his left-footed shot past a diving Carl Woszczynski, who anticipated correctly to his right but was out of reach.

Lassiter followed with a 30th-minute goal to take a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Rafael Garcia sent a looping ball over United’s back line to set Lassiter up. From the right side of the box, Lassiter shot right-footed, sneaking the ball past Woszczynski inside the near right post.

The match took a turn in the 62nd minute when Los Dos defender Oscar Sorto was shown a red card for a foul just outside the box. Arizona skied the subsequent free kick, but United would play the remainder of the match up a man.

Despite the absence of Sorto’s services, Los Dos goalkeeper Clement Diop and the defense would hold on for the clean sheet.

Arizona (0-1-0, 0 points) enters its second match of a five-game road trip against Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Wednesday at Starfire Stadium (10:30 p.m. ET).
