LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After six days and approximately 1,000 voices were heard, Louisville City FC and USL newcomer FC Cincinnati will compete for the River Cities Cup in head-to-head play starting this season.

The trophy’s title was selected after a two-phase digital campaign allowed fans to submit entries to be voted on throughout a 10-day period. With several dozen suggestions, the field was narrowed to five finalist submissions.

Voting on the finalists was closed at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, and the runaway winner  with more than 50 percent of the vote  was River Cities Cup. Once polls closed, Steamboat Cup (20 percent) and Riverboat Rivalry Cup (14 percent) competed closest with the eventual winner.

The league’s newest rivalry will take shape on April 16 as Eastern Conference finalist Louisville City visits FC Cincinnati at Nippert Stadium.

The teams will play a total of three matches against each other  two in Cincinnati and one at Louisville Slugger Field. Cincinnati hosts Louisville on April 16 and July 23  the first and final 2016 regular-season meetings between the Clubs.

Louisville City hosts FC Cincinnati on June 2.
