WILMINGTON, N.C. – Wilmington Hammerheads FC announced on Tuesday it had signed UNC-Wilmington defender Michael Mecham for the 2016 USL season.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Hammerheads,” said Mecham. “As a child I always wanted to be a professional soccer player so this is a dream come true. The Hammerheads have given me a great opportunity to play with a team I am familiar with and in a place I am familiar with and I am looking forward to joining them.“

Mecham was an All-Colonial Athletic Association Second Team selection this fall as the Seahawks finished second in the conference in goals-against average. He made 71 appearances in his college career, including 67 starts.

"I'm very excited to have Michael be a part of our roster plans for next season,” said Head Coach Mark Briggs. “I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to watch a number of his games as he attended UNCW. He will bring an enthusiasm and a desire that I'm looking for in all my players. He understands what it means to be a Hammerhead and to represent our community. He has had a fantastic mentor in Aidan Heaney at UNCW and is someone I have high hopes for in 2016.”
