California rivals Republic FC, Orange County squared off in the 2016 USL Championship Playoffs

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we return to the Western Conference Quarterfinals of the 2016 USL Championship Playoffs as No. 1 seed Sacramento Republic FC played host to No. 8 seed Orange County SC at Papa Murphy’s Park.

Looking to add to their Championship Final victory in 2014, Republic FC had been riding high in the Western Conference for much of the season. Led by a breakout season from Sacramento native Cameron Iwasa, who recorded 12 goals and earned All-League Second Team honors, and playmaker Danny Barrera, who finished second in the Championship with nine assists, Republic FC ended the regular season on an 11-game undefeated streak and clinched top spot with a 4-0 win against FC Tulsa in the final game of the regular season.

Orange County, meanwhile, saw their postseason hopes decided in dramatic fashion on the final Saturday of the season. Having finished in first place in the West during the 2015 season, Orange County scored three late goals in a 4-0 win against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC to overtake the Portland Timbers 2 on goal differential for the eighth and final place in the West’s postseason field. OCSC had some dangerous performers in their lineup, including playmaker Didier Crettenand, but had lost their last two meetings to Sacramento in the regular season after an early-season win at Papa Murphy’s Park.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
