Playoff six-pointer brought together Saint Louis, San Antonio for pivotal late-season clash

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we revisit one of the key games in the Western Conference race for the 2018 USL Championship Playoffs as Saint Louis FC played host to San Antonio FC at West Community Stadium.

Saint Louis entered the contest in seventh place in the Western standings, putting it on course for a first trip to the postseason in club history. Under the leadership of first-year Head Coach Anthony Pulis, the side had maintained a level of consistency throughout the campaign that had only seen it lose consecutive games once. STLFC was also entering off a big 4-3 victory against Sporting Kansas City II – at that point in sixth place – that had seen both Kyle Greig and Joey Calistri among the scorers to boost their playoff chances.

San Antonio, on the other hand, had its backs to the wall with four games to go in the season. Sitting in nine place, three points back of Saint Louis, the side entered after a tough week that had seen it fall to FC Tulsa the previous weekend and then to Sporting Kansas City II in midweek. That made this game a must-win for the visitors, with defeat seeming certain to make the climb above the playoff line almost impossible.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
