Featured as the USL Game of the Week on ESPN, this tilt at Taft Stadium produced a 10-goal thriller

Welcome to the Classic Championship Game of the Day, where today we look back at one of the most high-scoring game in the Championship’s history. Picked as the USL Game of the Week on ESPN, OKC Energy FC and Las Vegas Lights FC produced fireworks on the field with 10 goals, one shy of tying the league’s regular-season record for a single game.

The season had not started as planned for Energy FC, which dug itself into a serious hole in the playoff race early on. More recently, though, the club had found its form and entered the midweek contest on a five-game undefeated streak. Led by playmaker Jose Barril and experienced performers like defender Atiba Harris and forward Alex Dixon, OKC was looking to continue its climb back toward the playoff positions.

Las Vegas, on the other hand, had been up and down in its form midway through its inaugural season. Sitting two points ahead of Energy FC in the standings as it reached the midway point of its season, Lights FC had yet to string back-to-back victories together, but had the chance to as it arrived at Taft Stadium after coming off a 1-0 victory against Saint Louis FC in its most recent outing. Raul Mendiola had scored the winner that night and was set to play a major role in this encounter as well.

The scene is set, so sit back, relax and enjoy a classic clash from the Championship’s history.
