Clash for the Silver State Cup produced late fireworks at Greater Nevada Field

Welcome to today’s Classic Championship Game of the Day, where we’re going back to late in the 2018 USL Championship season for a thrilling contest between Silver State Cup rivals Reno 1868 FC and Las Vegas Lights FC.

Reno 1868 FC had produced a record-setting inaugural season in 2017 that saw the side record a then-record 75 goals in the regular season. By the final month of the season, Head Coach Ian Russell’s side was on course for another place in the playoffs, but it was looking to lock up the season series against its new rival from the south of the state.

Las Vegas Lights FC’s launch midway though 2017 ignited a rivalry immediately with its Northern neighbors. While the club’s inaugural season had produced great crowds and bright moments at Cashman Field, though, Lights FC entered its third and final meeting of the season knowing it needed to win to have a chance at the Silver State Cup. Those stakes, and the atmosphere produced by both sets of supporters in the 6,446 fans at Greater Nevada Field, led to a classic meeting that set the standard for future meetings.

So now, sit back, relax and enjoy a classic 90 minutes of Championship action.
